Its purpose is to provide a safe environment for the conservator, protecting against dangerous mould spores and pathogens when cleaning the insides and outsides of ancient and fragile rare books and manuscripts. It can also be used for a wide range of museum collections in a similar way, such as ethnographic, geological and natural history collections.
- How clean is your library?
- Do you enjoy cleaning dusty books?
- The DEPULVERA loves cleaning books and can do it all day long
- Dust is dangerous to books and people
- DEPULVERA removes dust to preserver books and protect people
Dust carries acidic and aggressive pollution such as sulphur dioxide that will damage the fabric of the books. Old books may also have generated mould growth which, if left on the books, will be a health risk to the staff and readers of the library.
Depulvera is the first and only automated book-cleaning machine. It is designed to take the drudgery and danger out of cleaning your library.
Cleaning books by traditional manual methods is a tedious and mind-numbing job. Because of this it is difficult to maintain a consistent standard throughout a full working day.
Depulvera cleans books faster, safer and more efficiently. The last book of the day will be cleaned with the same care and attention as the first.
This easy-to-use, labour-saving machine will safely clean 12 books per minute using only two operators, thereby reducing costs.
The Depulvera was conceived and created by TiGiEmme Srl, who are Italy’s leading experts in book handling, having worked for many years in the library sector, and who understand the specific problems caused by dust and mould.
Dust and mould released during the cleaning is extracted from the Depulvera using a specially adapted HEPA vacuum cleaner to protect the operators and the surrounding environment.
(Cleaning using non-HEPA vacuum cleaners will spread the growth of mould throughout the library and will endanger the user from serious pathogens.)
The compact size allows the Depulvera to be moved easily between narrow library shelving to clean books ‘in situ’.
The Depulvera operates so quietly that in facilities with a centralised vacuum extraction system it can be used in normal library hours without disruption.
Much thought has been given to the design of the machine to ensure that no damage ever occurs to the books during the cleaning process. Leading conservation experts were consulted during the development of the Depulvera to ensure that the safest materials and methods were used in its construction. Sophisticated electronic devices are used to sense any resistance against the book and stop the machine if a problem should occur. It is absolutely safe for the operator and for the books.
• Eliminates dust and mould from external surfaces of books
• Very simple to use
• Non marking soft rubber wheels
• Easy to manoeuvre in narrow spaces
• Non-catalysing natural bristle brushes
• Does not contaminate the surrounding environment while cleaning
The Depulvera still requires people to operate it but the automated cleaning of the volumes makes the process more enjoyable and faster.
